Frequently Asked Questions

Please check over the entire FAQ before contacting us. You might find your answer here.
Q: How often are packages shipped?
A: We usually ship packages daily. Though we make daily trips to the post office Monday through Saturday, please allow up to 3 days for your package to be shipped to allow for any unexpected delays. Because we live in a small, rural area far outside city limits, we do not have the option for postal pickup, therefore we almost always drive in on a daily basis to take packages to the nearest U.S. Post Office. Because of this, a package or two may not make it to the post office until two days after purchase.

Q: Are tracking numbers provided?
A: Yes, tracking numbers are entered into PayPal within 24 hours of each shipment. Please check your email for an email from Paypal with a link for easy tracking of your package. If you do not receive this email, simply contact us with your zip code and date of purchase and we will send your tracking number to you personally.

Q: Why grimoires of some colors a different price than others?
A: We use a variety of brands and even create our own personal colors through the blending of multiple colors. Some leather stains such as the antiques come in gel form and are much more expensive than liquid stains. Also certain colors like Blue Jean for example, take two entire bottles to completely stain a single grimoire.

Q. We I am having checkout problems. The PayPal button keeps taking me to a login page. I do not have a PayPal account. How to I make a Purchase without a PayPal account?
A. We are aware that sometimes PayPal's checkout system can be problematic. If you are unable to checkout using the checkout, in another words through clicking the "buy it now" or "add to cart" buttons, you will find a link under the price of each listing that will allow you to contact us for an invoice. Just follow the directions on the contact form and we will send you an invoice ASAP. Usually within the hour during the day.

NOTE: Often invoices requested after 9PM (CST) may not be sent until the next morning so y
ou can also make the payment using the donation button (right side bar on the main store page) to ensure that no one comes along and purchases the journal before we have a chance to get an invoice to you. Again, be sure to include which journal or item you are purchasing, your name and your email address.

Q: I want to send a journal/grimoire to a friend as a gift. Do you offer gift wrapping?
A: Yes, we LOVE sending journals as gifts and take pride in our free, eco-friendly gift wrapping! We gift wrap using only handmade lokta and quality handmade rice or cotton-based wrapping papers. Want to have a journal gift wrapped? Just ask? We will even handwrite a beautiful lokta paper card to your loved one to say anything you desire.

Q. What is the difference between a grimoire, a journal and a Book of Shadows?
A. A grimoire is a book that is specifically used to keep track of magickal and spiritual workings. A Book of Shadows is just another name for a grimoire but is often kept by those who identify as witches and can also be used to record information like correspondences, references, book notes, spells. A journal is a book where you can simply write your private thoughts. There is no rule, rhyme or reason as to what goes into a journal. You can use it to document patterns, keep track of daily activities or use it as a friend or therapeutic tool.

Q: How much is shipping & can I select a shipping service?
A: We only ship USPS Priority Mail, however, shipping within the United States is free. We also cover the taxes so the price you see under each listing is the price you pay at checkout IF you are within the United States ONLY. We do not have business accounts with UPS or FedEx so they are much more expensive, take longer to arrive and the nearest drop off facilities for these services are around 45 minutes to one hour away depending on traffic.

If you are outside the US...
Unfortunately due to shipping costs rising so dramatically (To ship a single grimoire or two smaller journals to Australia now costs $98!) we no longer ship overseas. If you are in Canada or Mexico, please contact us with your mailing location and we will look up exact shipping costs.

Q: Do you take custom orders?
A: We do not make custom journals due to never having consistent access to the same leathers and papers. We purchase what we can find at that time,  however, we offer a type of custom grimoire. Please check the grimoire page for details.

Q: Does the page count include the backside of each page or is it individual sheets only?
A: While many journal shops choose to count both sides of a single sheet as "two pages" as a written book does, we feel that can come across as a bit misleading when the pages are blank, therefore, the highlighted page count provided for our journals and grimoires is the number of actual individual sheets. The front and back side page count may be listed in parenthesis off to the side just to be thorough in detail.

Q. What does paper pound mean?
A. The poundage is the thickness/sturdiness of the paper. The thicker a sheet of paper the higher the pound. Handmade paper varies. Our grimoires use a standard 70lb paper from a local paper company. The majority of our journals are filled with extremely fine, high quality, handmade, tree-free papers like the well known, eco-friendly, female empowered lokta paper which we purchase through a company that hires mostly women and is then imported directly from Nepal. We even have journals with paper made from real Egyptian cotton, recycled rags and mulberry.

Q: Can I get handmade/specialty paper in my grimoire instead of standard paper?
A: Unfortunately no. Handmade paper is incredibly expensive, even in small, invitation sized sheets. To import 450-550 individual sheets of 9" x 12" handmade paper would cost between $700 $2000 depending on type and that's before we send it off to a factory be hole punched!

Our parchment paper does not come in the 9" x 12" size that fits our grimoires at this time and we never really know what size or type of handmade/special papers we will be able to get and when. We purchase whatever high quality, handmade paper we can find in bulk quantities at most affordable prices. Our grimoires come with a 70lb, 9" x 12" off-white colored paper that is pre-hole punched at the factory before we pick it up. It takes tea and coffee staining really well! If you don't mind taking the time to stain each page by hand, it is totally worth it once it dries and you refill your grimoire!

Q: Can I order a custom journal instead of a custom grimoire?
A: Not at this time.

Q: How can I best care for my Journal/Grimoire?
A: First of all, NEVER USE OIL on your leather journal or grimoire and always check the type of leather your book is made from. Grimoires are made of veg-tan (aka vegetable tanned) leather which comes in it's raw, natural color and is then stained to achieve it's bold hue. Because leather stains can be drying, you may want to periodically use a cream conditioner from somewhere like Tandy to gently massage into the surface ONLY of your grimore of you notice stiffness or drying.

Our grimoires are very thick and quite heavy so the leather must be super sturdy and durable to hold together while carrying it around. I personally use Dr. Jackson's Leather Conditioning Cream or NaturFlo Anti-Aging Leather Care Lotion on my veg-tan grimoires and journals.

When conditioning your grimoire, you might see a bit of color come off on the sponge. This is normal and shouldn't affect the overall color of your leather. You can also purchase a coating called resolene, (it looks like milk yet dries clear!) which we use to seal the color into every grimoire. This can reduce color bleed when conditioning.

Do NOT use any conditioner on journals that are made from any leather other than veg-tan. If you insist on conditioning your journal, please take it to a place like Tandy leather and speak with someone who knows exactly what conditioners to use for that specific leather.
Keep in mind, we usually use what we call "specialty" leathers for our journals which are purchased in large rolls or in very expensive, individual sheets like the embossed leathers and they are already supple, soft and conditioned during the tanning and preparation process. The best way to keep them looking their best is to store them away from direct sunlight. You may consider wrapping your journal in a light cloth to protect from dust particles I have found to be the biggest issue when it comes to maintaining the original look of my journals, especially on suede or suede-like leather. Dust is more difficult to remove from suede and suede-like leathers. To remove dust leather, use a dry cloth and gently wipe until the dust is removed. For non-oily stains, use a slightly damp cloth and gently rub the stain until it is no longer noticeable. Never handle your journal with oily hands. Foods, makeup or hair products all contain oils and residue that will leave permanent marks on leather.

Q: Can you call me directly or email me as soon as you get a specific journal I have been looking for listed?
A: We receive so many requests like this that it is impossible to keep up with everyone. Our team includes only three of us therefore not do we have time to call or message everyone who asks to be notified of upcoming journals. My suggestion is to follow us on Instagram where we post every journal and grimoire before it goes up for sale in the store, often days in advance.

We do however often make exceptions for our cherished repeat buyers. If you have purchased five or more journals from us within the last few months, we will do our best to keep you in the loop.
Just a note, we list most of our new journals on Thursdays around 3pm (CST)

Q: Are journals refillable?
A: Journals are not refillable however grimoires are. If a book is bound with cord along the spine, it cannot be refilled. The paper has been permanently sewn into the leather. Our large 13" x 10.5" veg-tan grimoires are easily refillable. Just untie the knots in the leather cords to loosen the book, open it then pull out the paper. Pre-punched refill paper is usually available and sold in packs of 100 sheets. If you need refill paper for your grimoire, just contact us and if we have it available we will provide you pricing info.
